Half是英语中常用词。它表达的概念浅显明确，特别是与其构成的诸多合成词，更是言简意 赅。如： half－way 半途；中途地
half－holiday 放假半天
half－pay 半薪
half－brother (sister) 异父（母）兄弟（姐妹）
half－done (cooked) 半熟的
使用half这个词时，有下列几点应当注意。
1. half与of的连用
half用在代词前，总要与of连用，即
1) We all received the invitation, buy only half of us could come.
2) ‘How much of the bread have you eaten?’—‘Half of it. ’
3) ‘Can I have my records back?’
‘Ok, but I’ve only had time to listen to half of them.’
Half 用在表示量度和数量单位的词前，不与of连用。
1) My little shop is not far from here, only half a mile away.
2) The dog eats half a pound of meat every day.
3) Half an hour later, they assembled in the large living-room.
Half用在名词前，与of连用不连用均可。
1) Half (of) the class were absent.
2) More than half (of) my friends are here.
3) I haven’t said half (of) the things I want to say.
2. by half 和by halves两个短语，虽然它们只是half的单复之差，可是表达的意思却相差甚远。 by half意为very much。
1) He is the better novelist by half. (相形之下)他是一位非常杰出的小说家。
2) You are too clever by half. 你也太过于聪明了。
By halves 意为 incompletely
1) He does nothing by halves. 他做什么事从不半途而废。
2) Better not do it at all than do it by halves. 做事不了了之还不如不做。
3. half作副词用表示程度，可是half和not half所表示的程度却差得很大。
half表示to the extent of a half; to a considerable degree即一半地；相当程度地。
1) John was half dead from hunger. 约翰饿得半死。
2) He was half asleep. 他要睡着了。
3) The boy was half under the bed with his legs sticking out. 那男孩半了身子钻以床下，只两腿伸出床处。 而not half却表示to the greatest possible extent, very(much); not at all; to imply the opposite of what is expressed.
1) He did not half like it. ( = He liked it very much.) [用于英国英语]
2) I don’t half like it ( = I don’t like it at all.) [用于美国英语]
