Rice balls, known as onigiri or musubi in Japanese, are popping up at Asian fast-food eateries across the city. Kawaba, a Rice Ball Japanese Deli on the trendy Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, has been open for six months and business is booming.Rice balls are stuffed with cooked fillings such as curried chicken, chicken teriyaki, grilled salmon, spicy jalapeno with miso diced meats, pickled Asian vegetables, spicy tuna and spicy salmon, breaded whole shrimp and braised turkey and onion.

Highlights of Kawaba include organic ingredients, gluten free choices, and vegetarian options. The balls are served soft and warm, rather than cold like sushi.Kawaba manager Shun Otsuka says people like the cooked organic and gluten free factors.
"Why people really like it, our rice balls, the reason is it's cooked. It's different from sushi that's why people its more easy to accept with that. That's a reason and we also have gluten-free options and vegetarian options and organic."

And rice balls are winning fans from people who are not typically fond of raw sushi. Like KoKo Allen from Los Angeles. "I like the rice balls because I'm not a huge fan of sushi and raw fish. Normally when I go to a sushi restaurant I order a California roll which the crab is cooked inside of it, as opposed to rice balls - everything that is inside the rice ball is fully cooked."
Katherine Spiers is a food writer for Serious Eats, a website about restaurants.
"Los Angeles was the first city in the United States to really embrace sushi and that was way back in 1966 so it was decades before it became popular anywhere else in America and ever since then, Asian restaurant owners have seen Los Angeles as a place where they can export their products. First they want to send it to Los Angeles and then the rest of the United States. That's partly because Los Angeles has a really large Asian population. It's also because California is known as a place where people want to try new food."
